We arrived here in Kuala Lumpur (KL) around 2:30 this afternoon our time, after a leisurely morning and eating "normal" food for breakfast. We flew Malaysian Airlines from Kuching.
Gerard arrived wearing 2 hats, as he usually does.
We are staying at the Melia Hotel downtown KL, on the 15th floor. This is a look at our pool way down there. We'll probably be making use of that. We've had 3 days of steady go, go, go, so we need a bit of a break.
We didn't start tonight though. We had a foodie tour booked, so we found our way to the pick-up point. We drove by this Esso station with an "On the Run". You'd think we were at home!
This part of Malaysia is very multi-cultural. In fact, KL is very much so, and a very cosmopolitan city. It's 70% Malay people (Muslim), 20% Chinese and 10% Indian to round it off. There's obviously a smattering of other people too, but these are the very general numbers. So first we went to a Malay hawker centre. There is no way I can remember the real names of the foods we ate, but I know this one started "brain _____". I can't remember the rest. It wasn't that though, it was a fish paste. Didn't taste bad.
Here's a picture of our group. The young couple on the left are from Hong Kong (she's originally from Vancouver, and he from New York). There were 2 guys with us from Germany as well.
We went to a night market and had something that tasted pretty good...a sort of pancake fried with crushed peanuts in it.
Outside the market, we saw these empty oil cans tied on top of a couple of cars. It turns out the cars are for sale, and that's how they indicate they want to sell them. Different.
Next, our guide said he would drop in on a friend, and see if he's up. He was joking - because it was the king's house...king of Malaysia. This is just the gate. We didn't go to see if he was up.
Then we went to an Indian place and had a ton of stuff, mostly light, very fine, fried batters with dipping sauces. This looks heavy, but it's all air inside. Very good.
We then ended up at a Chinese place. This was a picture of our Paperbag Chicken. Also some good food at this place.
They dropped us back at our hotel, so that's it for today. Until tomorrow.
